Blogging All Superintendents!

Tuesday, 13 January 2009 08:45 by nicole

Ah, there’s nothing like a new year to get the new you anticipating all things new!  Whether it’s going to the gym or actually visiting the produce section in your grocery store, people are making great efforts in improving their daily routines.  Cliché or not, making a resolution can be just the charge we need (committing to one is a whole other blog!)

So with the thought of improving daily routines, I’d like to introduce you to blogging for superintendents, the hot topic issue that was recently presented at the NSPRA (National School Public Relations Association) PR Power Hour and Webinar.

Superintendents across the country are blogging; blogging about topics such as budgets, classroom visits, or community current events.  Blogs are serving as another communication tool for districts to use.  They are helping put a face to superintendents and allowing them to virtually reach out to the community.

How does this differ from a newsletter, website, letter or any other form of communication by the superintendent?  Blogs are similar in style of a journal entry or log.  Actually, blog is short for “web log.”  Therefore, blogs offer a more day-to-day feel of the district. Although there have been concerns regarding blog comments (comments allow readers to give public feedback), these concerns have subsided since most districts can accept or decline comments before they go “live,” or actually appear on the site.

However (and that’s a big however), I can’t stress enough that a blog is not to be taken lightly.  If it is not updated or kept current (current takes on a whole new meaning in the Web 2.0 world) it will not be used to its full potential.  Writing a blog must become a part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth!

With that said, the workshop was incredibly informative and as always it was great to connect with fellow PenSPRA members.  Please click on the link below to read a sample of the Kershaw County School District Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan’s blog.   http://kcsdblog.wordpress.com/
